Free seminar on May 6

Salt Lake City – A popular fishing seminar will be held again in Salt Lake City.

The first Kokanee Seminar was held in June 2014. After the seminar, anglers contacted the Division of Wildlife Resources, asking if the seminar would be held again.

Paul Birdsey, cold water sport fisheries coordinator for the DWR, isn't surprised by the interest. He says many anglers in Utah want to catch kokanee salmon, but they're not sure how to get started.

"The seminar will give you the basics you need so you can feel confident pursuing this fish," Birdsey says. "Even experienced anglers should learn a thing or two."

May 6

The free seminar will be held May 6 at the Department of Natural Resources, 1594 W. North Temple in Salt Lake City. It begins at 7 p.m.

If you can't attend the seminar in person, you can watch it live on your computer. To watch it live, paste this link—http://bit.ly/1GpN74t— into your Web browser on the evening of May 6.

If you can’t attend or watch on May 6, no problem. A recording of the seminar should be posted on the DWR's YouTube channel by May 7. Once it's posted, you can watch it at www.youtube.com/UDWR.

Utah's Blue Ribbon Fisheries Advisory Council and the Strawberry Angler's Association are offering the free seminar. In addition to the instruction you'll receive, if you attend the seminar in-person, you might receive a free guided kokanee salmon fishing trip.

Two trips to Strawberry Reservoir will be given away.

What you’ll learn

Four kokanee salmon experts will present the seminar. Two of them-Jared Johnson and Wayne Leslie-are avid kokanee anglers. Ryan Mosley-the DWR biologist who manages the fishery at Flaming Gorge Reservoir-is also among the presenters.

The seminar will cover the following:

After the presentations, you can ask the presenters questions.
